The Sacrament of Baptism
Baptism imprints a unique and lasting spiritual sign on our soul, marking us out as being a member of Christ and of his Church. Baptism also gives us sanctifying grace, making us holy and helping us to share in the life of God.
The celebration of Baptism is a special moment in the life of a family. In asking to have a child baptised the parents and godparents take on the responsibility to help their child know God and live the values of love. For many our faith is handed on through generations and the role of grandparents in the life of their grandchild is very important. The blessing received at Baptism for the parents is to ‘help them know what to do for the good of their child and have the strength to do it.
Preparing for Baptism:

- You will need to bring baby’s birth certificate
- Both parents need to sign the booking form
- There is a preparation meeting for parents with the Baptism Team
- There will be a Welcome Mass where your child receives the first anointing and the Parish Community prays for them and for you.
- The Baptism Team will help you in your preparation and on the day.
When do Baptisms take place?:
In Christ the King, Cabra: Baptism is on the First Saturday of the month at 12:00noon. There is a maximum of three per session. If the number goes above this a second ceremony will take place at 1:15pm.
In Most Precious Blood, Cabra West: Baptism is on the Second and Fourth Saturdays at 4:00pm. There is a maximum of three per session.

For the Baptism of children 6 years old or over, there is a special programme of preparation. This will take place over four months and is offered once a year in October. Please contact the Parish Offices.
For adults who wish to be Baptised they take part in the faith journey called the “Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults”. The first step is to make an appointment with a priest here in the Parish which can be done through the Parish Office.
As your child becomes a member of God’s family, we hold you in prayer. Your child’s name and month of Baptism will be put up in the welcome space in the Church of Baptism. You will be invited to our annual Mass for all who have been baptised in that year.
