Healing and Strength

The Church has two sacraments of healing, the Sacrament of Reconciliation
(Confession) and the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. As part of
preparation for Holy Communion for the first time, we also celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. This is a sacrament that is with us throughout our lives to help us grow closer to God and know God’s love for us. In following the commandment to love God and love our neighbour, there are times when we need to mend broken relationships. The healing of this sacrament touches our mind, soul and spirit.
As we cope with illness and the frailty of getting older, the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is one in which we experience the healing strength of Jesus.
When we near the end of our lives, this sacrament with receiving holy communion and absolution prepares us for the final journey.

Sacrament of the Sick

The Sacrament of the Sick can be given to all who are seriously ill or elderly. It is also appropriate to receive the sacrament prior to surgery.

The sacrament involves anointing the forehead and hands with the holy oil. The primary grace to be received from this Sacrament is a healing of the soul, giving interior courage and peace to the sick person in the face of pain and anxiety.

If you or a family member is in hospital, there should be a Catholic Chaplin who will administer the Sacrament upon request. However, if you are sick at home the priests of the parish will be happy to call out to you.

A sick person who recovers can always receive this sacrament again in the future.
When we near the end of our lives, this sacrament with receiving holy communion and absoluFon prepares us for the final journey.
